Biomimicry 3.8 :: Biomimicry 3.8

Biomimicry 3.8

Biomimicry 3.8 is the global leader in biomimicry innovation consulting, professional training, and educational program and curricula development. Our mission is to train, equip, and connect scientists, engineers, architects, educators, and other innovators to sustainably emulate nature’s 3.8 billion years of brilliant designs and strategies.

The “3.8” in our name refers to the more than 3.8 billion years that life has been adapting and evolving to changing conditions on the planet since the very first life forms emerged. If you think about it, that’s a staggering and, in many ways, unfathomable amount of R&D which humankind can learn from, actively apply, and use to innovate for a better world.

While obviously not in the billions, we do have a number of years of rich heritage in our collective DNA. The Biomimicry Guild was founded in 1998, a year after Janine Benyus wrote Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. She and co-founder Dayna Baumeister set up their organization as a for-profit consulting firm but operated it as a not-just-for-profit (or rather, an if-we-are-lucky-we-might-make-a-profit). About seven years later, Bryony Schwan migrated into our ecosystem to found the Biomimicry Institute, a 501(c)(3) organization. Our keystones were in place.

Over the past 14 years, our organization has helped more than 250 clients and partners redesign sneakers, carpets, furniture, manufacturing processes, airplanes, and even entire cities, all in nature’s sustainable image. In addition, our non-profit Institute has developed truly innovative programs for university and K-12/youth education as well as informal environments such as museums, zoos, nature trails, and other public spaces.

We’ve trained and certified world-class cohorts of Biomimicry Professionals and Specialists. And we’ve continued to evolve our offering of online educational courses and research tools, including, our award-winning online library of nature’s strategies and solutions.

In 2011, we unified the Guild and Institute, into a single identity, Biomimicry 3.8, and in doing so developed a model with the financial and managerial gusto to take biomimicry mainstream, make it global, and let it localize in thousands of communities worldwide.

It’s a new species of company with a global reach that weaves together our non-profit and for-profit goals. As a social enterprise including both a B Corporation and a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, it extends and expands upon our heritage of bringing together scientists, engineers, architects, and other innovators to create sustainable technologies and business practices.

Our leadership team, including co-founders Janine Benyus, Dayna Baumeister, Bryony Schwan (Institute) and Chris Allen, has worked in concert with staff and partners worldwide to reach millions through talks, walks, and media as well as trained hundreds who now practice biomimicry in their professions. A global network of biomimics is emerging rapidly on six continents as we speak. We hope you will join us on this amazing ride.
